Vienna Day 2: A Stroll Through History and a Night at the Carousel

Vienna, oh Vienna! Today was a day of history, music, and a touch of royal grandeur. The sun was shining, the streets were buzzing, and I was ready to dive into the rich culture that makes this city so unforgettable.

Morning: A Walk Through History

My first stop of the day? None other than Mozart’s House. Stepping inside, I could almost hear the echoes of his genius compositions. Wandering through the rooms where the maestro himself once lived and worked was like stepping back in time. The exhibits are fascinating, filled with letters, portraits, and even some of his original scores. It’s incredible to think that so much musical history was created within these very walls.

After soaking in the musical vibes, I made my way to the Kapuzinergruft—the Imperial Crypt where many of Austria’s royal Habsburgs are laid to rest. It was both eerie and awe-inspiring to walk among the ornate tombs and imagine the lives of emperors and empresses from centuries past. The craftsmanship of the crypts is truly something to behold, and it’s a quiet, reflective place that contrasts sharply with the lively streets just outside. Tickets are required and you can purchase them HERE, or at the entrance to the crypt.

Midday: A Visit to St. Stephen’s Cathedral

Of course, no visit to Vienna would be complete without stopping by the iconic St. Stephen’s Cathedral. This Gothic masterpiece has been standing tall in the heart of the city for over 700 years. The cathedral’s towering spire, which reaches nearly 450 feet, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Vienna. As I stepped inside, I was struck by the grandeur and the intricate details of the stonework, stained glass windows, and the stunning mosaic roof.

St Stephen’s Cathedral

St. Stephen’s has seen so much history—from its original construction in the 12th century to surviving multiple wars and even a devastating fire in 1945. The cathedral has been meticulously restored and remains a symbol of Vienna’s resilience and cultural heritage. Climbing the South Tower was a bit of a workout, but the panoramic views of Vienna were absolutely worth it. Standing up there, you can truly appreciate how this cathedral has been a central part of the city’s skyline for centuries.

Afternoon: Palaces and Fountains Galore

Continuing my historical journey, I wandered through the area dotted with fountains and palaces. Vienna doesn’t do things by halves—these palatial buildings are dripping with opulence, each one more impressive than the last. The gardens were in full bloom, and I found myself lingering by the fountains, just watching the water dance and sparkle in the sunlight. It’s easy to lose track of time in a place like this, where every corner you turn seems to reveal another stunning piece of architecture.

The walk back to the hostel was equally delightful, especially since I stumbled upon a street lined with every shop imaginable. From high-end boutiques to quirky little stores, it was a shopper’s paradise. I couldn’t resist popping into a few of them—just browsing, of course (mostly). The vibe here is so lively, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the best of what Vienna has to offer.

Evening: Cooling Down with a Carousel Ride

After a busy morning and afternoon, a siesta back at Hostel Ruthensteiner was definitely in order. And my timing couldn’t have been better. I was at the hostel for about 30 minutes when the rain began. It was definitely welcome, because it cooled everything down. With the temperatures soaring, it felt good to just relax, recharge, and escape the heat for a while.

But the day wasn’t over yet! As the sun started to set, we were blessed with a rain shower which cooled everything down, so I headed out with a few of my hostel roommates for a special evening treat—a visit to the Prater Wien, an amusement park right in Vienna. Our goal was to ride the Ferris Wheel and to check out the park.

Prater Wein

There’s something magical about riding a carousel at night, with the lights twinkling and the music playing softly in the background. We laughed, took pictures, and just enjoyed the simple joy of being in the moment. It was the perfect way to end a day full of history and exploration.

As I head back to the hostel, I can’t help but feel like Vienna has already started to weave its spell on me. Tomorrow, who knows what new adventures await? For now, though, I’m content with the memories of today’s walk through history and a night under the stars.
