After visiting Mount Rushmore, which is the main attraction in the Black Hills area in South Dakota, there are a few other things you can do.
Wind Cave, is located in the Black Hills area, and is the perfect compliment to the rolling prairies of the area.
Wind Cave is considered one of the longest and most complex caves in the world. The cave is named for the barometric winds at its entrance, and it is home to boxwork, a unique formation rarely found in any other cave.
Tours are available daily, and the temperature in the cave is 54° F (12° C) year round, so bring a jacket. Backpacks, water bottles or anything that doesn’t fit in a pocket is not allowed.
The other thing to do in the area is drive through Custer State Park.
There is a $20 fee per vehicle for a temporary 7 day pass.
Take the wildlife scenic road to see the herds of bison grazing, especially in the late afternoon, and prairie dogs scouting the area on their hind legs.
The Bison are free roaming, so you may have to stop and let them cross the road, sometimes very slowly. Occasionally they just stop, so don’t be in a hurry on this drive. The landscape is beautiful, and the drive is wonderful, so this is an activity that I recommend to do.
