Embark on a breathtaking coastal adventure as I take you on a journey along Highway 1 from the Bay Area to Van Damme Park. This iconic highway offers stunning vistas, rugged cliffs, and charming coastal towns, making it the perfect route for a memorable road trip. Leaving the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area behind, the drive along Highway 1 treats you to panoramic ocean views and scenic landscapes right from the start. As you wind your way along the coast, be prepared to be mesmerized by the beauty that unfolds before you. Along the route, you’ll encounter charming coastal towns that are worth exploring. You can choose to stop along the way as there are quite a few little town on the route. I stopped in the cute little beach town of Stinson Beach. The town has an area right off the beach that includes little shops, food options and a place to sit a spell and take in the beach air.
You will drive through Muir Woods so make a detour to the beach and walk the boardwalk to get to the cove. It is pretty secluded, so it’s a perfect place to sit a spell if the weather permits. It was overcast and rainy when i was there, so I didn’t stay too long.
Once you leave and continue on Highway towards Point Reyes. Make a detour to Point Reyes Lighthouse, a historic lighthouse perched atop rugged cliffs. Marvel at its towering presence and learn about its rich maritime history. Walk down the 400+ steps to the Lighthouse, visit the little gift shop and then take some time to stand and watch for whales that migrate through the waters below the lighthouse.
I ended today’s journey along Highway 1 at Van Damme Park, a coastal gem nestled in the heart of Mendocino County. This picturesque park offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking trails, kayaking, and beachcombing. Explore the lush fern canyons, marvel at the stunning coastal views, or simply relax on the sandy beach. Camping spots are also available among the trees, for those seeking a closer connection to nature, which is usually my overnight choice. Bathrooms are available, but there are no shower facilities.
A short drive from Van Damme Park, you’ll find the idyllic town of Mendocino. Explore its quaint streets lined with historic Victorian buildings, browse art galleries and boutiques, and savor delicious local cuisine. The town’s artistic and bohemian atmosphere adds to its unique charm.
