Exploring Northeastern Scotland: A Journey to Dunnottar Castle, Deeside, Ballater, Braemar, and the Linn of Dee

Embarking on a journey through Scotland’s captivating landscapes and historical landmarks is an adventure of a lifetime. For something different, I chose to take 3 different day tours out of Aberdeen, with today being the first tour. For those seeking an unforgettable experience, Rabbie’s offers an exceptional tour that covers some of the most enchanting spots in Scotland. On this trip, we visited the majestic Dunnottar Castle, the picturesque Deeside, the charming village of Ballater, the historic Braemar, and the breathtaking Linn of Dee. Here’s a detailed look at what you can expect on this marvelous journey.

Dunnottar Castle: A Fortress of Legends

Our journey begins with a visit to the iconic Dunnottar Castle, a cliff-top fortress steeped in history and surrounded by stunning coastal views. Located near Stonehaven, this castle has played a significant role in Scotland’s history, from being a defensive stronghold against Viking invasions to safeguarding the Scottish Crown Jewels during the 17th century. As you explore the ruins, you’ll be transported back in time, imagining the lives of those who once inhabited this dramatic site. The rugged beauty and historical significance of Dunnottar Castle make it a must-visit destination.

NOTE: you do need tickets to access the grounds. The ticket office is located at the castle entrance, or you can purchase tickets online HERE.

Deeside: Royal and Regal Landscapes

Next, we travel to Deeside, a region known for its royal connections and picturesque scenery. Deeside is home to the British royal family’s summer residence, Balmoral Castle, which you can glimpse as we drive through this enchanting area. The lush greenery, rolling hills, and serene rivers create a landscape that is both tranquil and awe-inspiring. Deeside offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and regal charm, making it a highlight of our tour. The tour guide offered us the option to visit Balmoral Castle instead of going to see Ballater and Braemar, however since I have plans to tour Balmoral Castle on Tuesday with another day tour, I chose to stay with the original itinerary.

Ballater: A Quaint Highland Village

Our journey continues to the delightful village of Ballater, nestled in the heart of Royal Deeside. Known for its Victorian heritage and close proximity to Balmoral Castle, Ballater exudes a quaint charm with its stone-built cottages, independent shops, and cozy cafes. Take a leisurely stroll through the village, visit the local shops, or enjoy a cup of tea while soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Ballater is a perfect spot to unwind and appreciate the simplicity of Highland life.

Braemar: History and Highland Games

From Ballater, we head to the historic village of Braemar, famous for its annual Highland Games attended by the royal family. Braemar is surrounded by stunning landscapes, including the majestic Cairngorms National Park. Explore the village’s rich history, visit the Braemar Castle, or simply enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Braemar’s unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes it a fascinating stop on our journey. We stopped for lunch in Braemar, and I had a great salad at Farquharson’s Bar & Kitchen, and was able to eat outside and enjoy the beautiful day!

Linn of Dee: Nature’s Masterpiece

Our final destination is the Linn of Dee, a dramatic gorge on the River Dee. This natural wonder is a favorite spot for nature lovers and photographers alike. The river rushes through the narrow gorge, creating a spectacular display of waterfalls and rapids. Surrounded by ancient Caledonian pine forests, the Linn of Dee offers a serene and picturesque setting for a leisurely walk or a moment of reflection. It’s the perfect end to our scenic tour, leaving you with lasting memories of Scotland’s wild beauty.
