Exploring Munich’s Historic Charm: A Relaxed Start to My Bavarian Adventure

After a short bus ride from Salzburg, I arrived in Munich. Since I was feeling a little under the weather with a cold, I decided the best thing to do was to take it easy on my first day in Munich. I spent most of the day relaxing at my hostel, Wombat’s City Hostel, reading and napping to give my body the down time it obviously needed. Even though I didn’t get out much on the first day, I still got a feel for the city on my walk from the bus station. Munich has such a rich history—it’s been around since the 12th century when it was founded by Benedictine monks, which is where the name “München” (meaning “by the monks”) comes from. This city has seen it all: from medieval times to modern day, and I could already sense I was in for some serious cultural immersion.

By day 2 my cold was full blown but I didn’t want to spend my first full day at the hostel. I decided to go for a leisurely walk through the city to see some sights that were close to home. My first major stop was the Munich Residenz, the former palace of Bavarian monarchs. Let me tell you, this place is massive! It’s not just a palace but a maze of ornate rooms, museums, and beautiful courtyards. It was home to the Wittelsbach family, who ruled Bavaria for over 700 years, so the place is packed with royal history. Walking through its grand halls, I could almost imagine the kings and queens who lived here centuries ago. The opulence is next-level, from golden walls to breathtaking art collections.

On my way to the Residenz, I made a stop at Munich Cathedral (Frauenkirche), with its famous twin towers that you can’t miss. Built in the 15th century, it’s one of Munich’s most iconic buildings. Legend has it, the devil himself left a footprint in the church after being tricked by the builders—definitely one of the more fun stories I came across!

Just a little further down, I visited St. Peter’s Church, the oldest in Munich. If you’re up for it (and not fighting off a cold like me), you can climb the tower for some of the best views of the city.

Even though I’ve been taking it easy, it’s amazing how much I’ve already absorbed, just meandering through the streets, of Munich’s mix of history, stunning architecture, and lively atmosphere is truly captivating. I can’t wait to explore more! And hopefully feeling better tomorrow for my day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle.
