Day 1: Discovering Heidelberg’s Historic Gems
My journey in Heidelberg began with a deep dive into the city’s rich history and architectural marvels. Here’s a fun and informative recap of my first day exploring this charming German town.
Heidelberg Castle: A Majestic Start
My day kicked off with a visit to the iconic Heidelberg Castle. Perched on a hillside overlooking the city, this majestic ruin offers a stunning blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. The castle’s history dates back to the 13th century, and it has witnessed numerous events over the centuries. I took a guided tour to learn about the castle’s fascinating past, including its role in the Thirty Years’ War and the impact of lightning strikes that led to its current state of ruin.
To get to the castle you will be walking up what felt like 1000 steps. It was quite a challenge, but totally worth it when you see the view from the top. You do need a ticket to access the castle, although you can wander the garden for free. You can purchase the tickets at the castle when you arrive.
The castle grounds are expansive and include beautiful gardens, the Heidelberg Tun that holds 220,000 liters of wine (one of the world’s largest wine barrels), and the German Pharmacy Museum. The panoramic views of the Neckar River and the city below are simply breathtaking, again reminding you that making the uphill trek is well worth the effort.
Old Bridge Heidelberg: A Walk Through Time
Next, I strolled down to the Old Bridge (Alte Brücke), another iconic landmark in Heidelberg. This historic stone bridge spans the Neckar River and connects the old town with the eastern part of the city. Built in the 18th century, the bridge is adorned with beautiful sculptures, including the famous Bridge Monkey, which is said to bring good luck.
Walking across the Old Bridge felt like stepping back in time. The views of the river, the lush hills, and the castle perched above are absolutely picturesque. It’s a perfect spot for photography and simply soaking in the historic ambiance.
Market Square (Marktplatz): Heart of the Old Town
My final stop for the day was the bustling Market Square, located in the heart of Heidelberg’s Altstadt (Old Town). Surrounded by charming cafes, restaurants, and historic buildings, the square is a vibrant hub of activity. The centerpiece is the Church of the Holy Spirit, an impressive Gothic church that dominates the skyline.
The Market Square is also home to the Hercules Fountain, a popular meeting point for locals and tourists alike. I enjoyed a leisurely walk around the square, sampling local treats from the market stalls and soaking in the lively atmosphere. It’s a great place to sit down with a coffee, people-watch, and plan the next steps of your Heidelberg adventure.

Day 1 in Heidelberg was a perfect introduction to the city’s rich history and charming ambiance. From the majestic heights of Heidelberg Castle and the timeless beauty of the Old Bridge to the lively energy of Market Square, each stop offered a unique glimpse into what makes this city so special.
