My Thoughts
Traveling these past almost 3 months, I will tell you that I have chosen buses and trains the most to get me to my destinations. When I booked my first bus ticket, I only chose it over a train because the cost was a quarter of the train, and the journey time was less, if you can believe that. Trains sometimes have so many stops verses a bus that it takes longer to get to your destination. If you decide on using buses, I recommend FLIXBUS, as the buses were always on time, clean, with free WIFI and toilets.
When I rented a car for 6 days in Scotland, because I chose full coverage insurance, the bill was extremely high. Although I love driving and prefer traveling in my 4Runner, obviously that was not an option in Europe. Also parking can also be an issue in these old cities due to the layouts and small roads.
Other than using a plane to get to Scotland, and then home again from Rome in November, it was nice not having to be at an airport 2 hours prior to departure. With trains and buses, you just show up and board when your bus or train arrives.
