Day 12 and a Day Trip to Bath, Stonehenge, and Windsor: A Journey Through Time

Greetings, fellow travelers! Today is day 12 of being in London, and I was ready for a road trip. I embarked on a delightful day trip with Golden Tours, exploring three of England’s most iconic sites: Bath, Stonehenge, and Windsor. This journey offered a fascinating dive into the rich history, stunning architecture, and mystical landscapes that make each destination unique. Let me take you through this enchanting adventure, packed with history, beauty, and a touch of magic.

First Stop: Bath – A City Steeped in History and Elegance

History & Highlights: Our first destination, the historic city of Bath, is renowned for its Roman heritage and Georgian architecture. The city was founded around natural hot springs, which the Romans developed into a complex of baths and temples. The main attraction here is the Roman Baths, one of the best-preserved ancient spas. Bath also boasts the stunning Bath Abbey and the picturesque Pulteney Bridge, reminiscent of Florence’s Ponte Vecchio. I loved Bath, and loved wandering the streets. I got an ice cream cone, and sat in the square by the Abbey to enjoy a street performer playing the trumpet. It was a nice way to end the visit to this charming old city.

Exploring Bath:

  • Roman Baths: Stepping into the Roman Baths is like traveling back in time. The complex includes the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, and the Roman Bath House. The museum offers fascinating insights into the daily life of ancient Romans. You do need tickets to access the baths, and you can purchase them HERE.

  • Bath Abbey: This majestic church, Bath Abbey, with its stunning Gothic architecture, offers breathtaking views from its tower. It’s a perfect spot for a quick history lesson and some beautiful photos.

  • Pulteney Bridge & Parade Gardens: One of only four bridges in the world with shops across its full span on both sides, Pulteney Bridge is a charming sight. The nearby Parade Gardens provide a lovely place for a relaxing stroll along the River Avon. There is a 2.50 fee to enter the gardens, as they are private, but so worth the cost if you have time.

Second Stop: Stonehenge – The Mysterious Megalithic Monument History & Mystique:

The next stop on our journey took us to Stonehenge, one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, dating back to around 3000 BC, has long been shrouded in mystery. Theories abound about its purpose, ranging from an astronomical observatory to a religious site. There are two ways to see the site. First way is to walk from the parking lot to the site which was quite a way or you can purchase tickets HERE which includes parking and a shuttle to take you to the site and the visitor center.

The Stone Circle at Stonehenge

Exploring Stonehenge:

  • The Stone Circle: The main attraction, of course, is the iconic stone circle. Visitors can walk around the stones and ponder the many mysteries that surround this ancient site. The audio guide provides fascinating insights into the different theories about its construction and purpose.
  • Visitor Centre: The nearby Visitor Centre offers a rich collection of artifacts and an immersive exhibition that explores the history of Stonehenge and the people who built it.

Final Stop: Windsor – A Royal Experience

History & Highlights: Our last stop was Windsor, home to the magnificent Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and an official residence of the British monarch. The castle has been a royal residence for over 1,000 years, making it a key part of Britain’s royal history. Tickets are needed and you can book them HERE.

Windsor Castle

Exploring Windsor:

  • Windsor Castle: Unfortunately we were not able to explore the castle’s opulent State Apartments, adorned with works of art by masters like Rembrandt and Leonardo da Vinci, because the castle is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. I would have loved to have seen the Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, a miniature masterpiece, was another highlight. Don’t miss St. George’s Chapel, the site of numerous royal weddings, including that of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
  • The Town of Windsor: The town of Windsor was adorable and I so enjoyed meandering down the street and enjoying the day. There were plenty of places to stop and have a cider, which I did towards the end of our allotted time. If you love fudge, check out the Fudge Kitchen, and try one of their free samples.

Tips for a Great Day Trip:

  • Timing: Golden Tours provided a well-organized schedule, allowing ample time to explore each site. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, as there’s plenty of walking involved.
  • Photography: All three locations are incredibly photogenic. Keep your camera ready for stunning shots, especially at the Roman Baths and Stonehenge.
  • Local Treats: Try some traditional treats like a Sally Lunn Bun shop in Bath or indulge in a classic cream tea in Windsor.

This day trip with Golden Tours was an unforgettable journey through time, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you’re a history buff, a culture enthusiast, or just looking for a beautiful day out, Bath, Stonehenge, and Windsor offer a rich and varied experience. Until next time, happy travels!
