Day 4: A Royal Visit to Nymphenburg Palace, Viktualienmarkt Delights, and a Final Stroll in Munich

My final day in Munich started off royally with a trip to Nymphenburg Palace. After exploring the palace grounds, I treated myself to a piece of Apple Cake at the charming outdoor café on the grounds, before heading to Viktualienmarkt for dinner. The day ended with a peaceful stroll back to my hostel, soaking in the last views of Munich before I head to Zurich in the morning.

Nymphenburg Palace is a true gem in Munich, and it’s easy to see why. This stunning Baroque palace was originally built in 1664 as a summer residence for the rulers of Bavaria. It was a gift from Elector Ferdinand Maria to his wife, Henriette Adelaide, to celebrate the birth of their son. Over the years, the palace was expanded, becoming a sprawling estate that is now one of the largest royal palaces in Europe. The grand central building is filled with gorgeous frescoes, opulent rooms, and stunning works of art. One of the highlights is the Hall of Mirrors, which rivals any you’d find in other European palaces. You do need tickets to enter the palace, and you can purchase them when you arrive. There are no guided tours, but you can purchase an audio guide for an additional cost, or read the information provided in each of the rooms.

But the true magic of Nymphenburg lies in its extensive parks and gardens. Spanning over 490 acres, the park is a beautiful blend of Baroque and English landscape garden styles, with meticulously manicured lawns, elegant fountains, and serene lakes. There are even a few hidden gems within the park, like the charming Amalienburg, a hunting lodge with rococo interiors that looks like something out of a dream. I could’ve easily spent hours just wandering the grounds, soaking up the history and the peaceful atmosphere.

After the palace visit, I enjoyed a light snack at one of the outdoor cafés in the park. Sitting under the trees, enjoying the sunshine, and people-watching was the perfect way to unwind before heading to Viktualienmarkt for dinner. If you’re a food lover, Viktualienmarkt is paradise—it’s Munich’s most famous farmers market, with endless stalls offering fresh produce, Bavarian delicacies, cheeses, meats, and all sorts of treats. I grabbed a salad in a taco shell, with fresh grilled salmon, which totally hit the spot. The place was packed, especially the beer gardens, and I loved seeing people enjoying the beautiful sunny late afternoon.

After dinner, I took one last leisurely walk through Munich, enjoying the city lights and the charming streets. It was the perfect way to cap off my time in this beautiful city before heading to Zurich in the morning. Munich, with its rich history, royal palaces, and vibrant markets, truly stole my heart.
