Day 2 and Day 3 in Amsterdam: A Visit to the Anne Frank House and Exploring the City’s Charm

On my second and third day in Amsterdam, I delved deeper into the city’s poignant history and vibrant culture. The highlight of the day was a visit to the Anne Frank House, followed by more wandering through Amsterdam’s enchanting streets and canals. Here’s a recount of this memorable day, filled with reflection and discovery.

Morning: The Anne Frank House

A Sobering Visit: The Anne Frank House is one of Amsterdam’s most significant and moving historical sites. This museum, located on the Prinsengracht canal, was once the secret annex where Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis during World War II. Anne’s diary, which she wrote during her time in hiding, has become one of the most poignant personal accounts of the Holocaust.

Exploring the Museum:

  • The Secret Annex: Walking through the narrow corridors and steep staircases of the secret annex was a powerful experience. The rooms have been preserved as they were during Anne’s time, with the original wallpaper and even some of the magazine cutouts Anne used to decorate her room. The small space conveyed a sense of the fear and confinement the Frank family endured.
  • The Diary Room: One of the most emotional parts of the visit was seeing Anne’s original diary on display. The museum also features quotes from her writings, photographs, and videos that provide a deeper understanding of her life and the historical context.
  • Reflection: The museum concludes with an exhibition on human rights and discrimination, encouraging visitors to reflect on the importance of tolerance and justice. This visit was not only educational but also deeply moving, reminding me of the resilience of the human spirit.
  • Tickets: Book your tickets early HERE, as they do sell out quickly as it is an extremely popular attraction in Amsterdam.

Afternoon: Wandering Amsterdam’s Streets

Exploring the Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) After the emotionally heavy visit to the Anne Frank House, I spent the afternoon wandering through the Nine Streets, a charming area known for its picturesque canals, unique boutiques, and cozy cafes. This district is perfect for leisurely exploration, offering a mix of vintage shops, artisanal goods, and quaint eateries.

Flower Market: I found the Flower Market, which I loved. It’s a good thing I am traveling by backpack with limited space because I would have enjoyed buying some bulbs to plant at home in my garden. Unfortunately they would never make it home whole being in my backpack for the next 3 months.

Canal Views and Bridges Amsterdam’s canals are a quintessential part of the city’s charm, and I made sure to take plenty of photos. The bridges, each with their unique character, offer perfect vantage points to capture the beauty of the canals lined with iconic Dutch houses. The tranquility of the water and the soft, golden light of the afternoon made for a perfect setting to relax and take in the scenery.

Local Delicacies As I continued to explore, I indulged in more local delicacies. A visit to a cheese shop provided a taste of various Dutch cheeses, each more delicious than the last. I also enjoyed a haring (raw herring), a traditional Dutch snack, served with onions and pickles. For those less adventurous, there are plenty of sweet treats, like stroopwafels and poffertjes, to enjoy. Also check out the cheese stores that are prevalent in Amsterdam, and try a piece of Gouda.

Evening: Relaxing by the Canal

As evening approached, I found a cozy cafe with outdoor seating by one of the canals. It was the perfect spot to unwind, sip on a cider, and watch the world go by. The calm waters, passing boats, and the gentle hum of the city created a serene atmosphere, perfect for reflecting on the day’s experiences.

Final Thoughts on Day 2

Day 2 in Amsterdam was a blend of deep historical reflection and the simple pleasures of exploring a beautiful city. The Anne Frank House left a profound impact, reminding me of the importance of remembering history and honoring those who suffered. The rest of the day, spent wandering the picturesque streets and indulging in local flavors, was a delightful way to experience Amsterdam’s unique charm.

As I look forward to the days ahead, I’m excited to continue discovering the hidden gems and cultural treasures of this vibrant city. Stay tuned for more adventures as I have booked a countryside bike tour and museum rickets to expand my experience through Amsterdam!
