Frankfurt: Castles, Cathedrals, and Sweet Treats

I chose to spend only 2 full days in Frankfurt, Germany, and was happy I made that decision. Frankfurt was a delightful mix of historical exploration, cultural immersion, and a touch of indulgence, but not too much to do other than a few historical sites and attractions. Hereโ€™s a fun and informative recap of my two day adventure in this bustling city.

A Morning by the River: Hรถchst Castle

I started my day with a serene walk along the river, taking in the peaceful surroundings and the beautiful views. My destination was Hรถchst Castle, a historical gem located in the Hรถchst district of Frankfurt. This medieval castle, with its impressive towers and charming courtyard, is a perfect spot for history enthusiasts and anyone looking to experience a piece of Germanyโ€™s rich past. The castle dates back to the 14th century and offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history. Wandering through its halls and gardens was like stepping back in time, and I couldn’t help but marvel at the architecture and the stories these ancient walls could tell.

A Train Ride to Frankfurt: Exploring the Heart of the City

After soaking up the history at Hรถchst Castle, I hopped on a train and headed into the heart of Frankfurt. The train ride was smooth and efficient, showcasing Germany’s excellent public transportation system. My first stop was the stunning Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, known locally as Kaiserdom. This towering Gothic cathedral, with its striking red sandstone facade, is a true architectural masterpiece. Climbing to the top of the cathedral’s tower rewarded me with breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

Next, I stopped by some of Frankfurt’s renowned museums. The city is home to a cluster of museums along the River Main, known as Museumsufer (Museum Embankment). I chose not to visit any museums today, but there are plenty of ones to choose from in this area. From Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary works, the museum’s collection is both extensive and diverse, offering something for every art lover.

A Stroll Through the Square: Rรถmerberg

No visit to Frankfurt is complete without a stroll through Rรถmerberg, the historic town square. The square is surrounded by picturesque half-timbered houses and is home to the Rรถmer, Frankfurtโ€™s iconic town hall with its distinctive stepped gables. The vibrant atmosphere, with street performers, bustling cafes, and charming shops, made it a delightful place to wander and soak up the local culture. The square was hopping on this Saturday, and I can only imagine what it looks like during Oktoberfest.

A Sweet Treat at Hรคagen-Dazs

After a day of sightseeing, I treated myself to a delicious ice cream at Hรคagen-Dazs. Thereโ€™s something wonderfully indulgent about enjoying a creamy scoop of your favorite flavor while people-watching in a bustling city square. It was the perfect way to unwind and savor the moment.

Heading Back in the Rain

As the day came to an end, I headed back to my Airbnb. The weather took a turn, and a gentle rain began to fall. Walking in the rain added another level of happiness to the day, with the smell of rain and the soft patter of raindrops creating a soothing soundtrack on my umbrella.

Rainy Walk home over the river Main

For day 2 the plan was to tour Palmengarten, however when I arrived it had just started to rain. I hung out under the trees for a bit, but there was no break in the rain, so I headed to the Senckenberg Natural History Museum.

All I can say about the Senckenberg Natural History Museum is that it was no match for the museums in London. Between the British Museum and the Natural History Museum I was totally spoiled regarding exceptional museums. The Senckenberg Natural History Museum was geared mainly to kids, and a lot of the exhibits were only written in German, with no English translation. They did have one 30 minute video regarding the Amazon and how the ecology is truly integrated with the life of the forest.

Final Thoughts

My two days in Frankfurt was a perfect introduction to the city’s blend of historical charm, cultural richness, and modern vibrancy. From the tranquil riverside and historic Hรถchst Castle to the awe-inspiring cathedral, lively square, and sweet ice cream treat, every moment was a new adventure. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow in Frankfurt has in store!

Stay tuned for more adventures as I continue exploring this fascinating city. Happy travels!
