Yellowstone National Park. Everyone has heard of it and millions of people from around the world travel to visit the park every year.
What no one will tell you is that you will be doing a whole lot of driving, at slow speeds, and behind a lot of drivers who drive even slower.
But there is a reward for all that driving.
The sites in Yellowstone are wondrous, and very interesting.
Did you know that Yellowstone:
- Was the first National Park created on March 1, 1872 by President Ulysses S Grant
- Is home to the majority of the world’s geysers and hot springs
- Houses Old Faithful within it’s boundaries
- Is home to the Grizzly Bear and wolf, and free ranging Bison and Elk
I camped at Lewis Lake, and it had no amenities like showers, or store for incidentals, just your basic pit toilet. Most of the other areas were closed for the season already, so you will have more options if you are traveling in the summer.
I saw so many bison. I even passed a few just walking down the road on my way out of the park. It was pretty wild to creep by this animal weighing over 2000 pounds, and he just keeps on walking his own path. I also saw an Bull Elk in a meadow, sharing a late afternoon meal with a Bison.
You do need to be Bear Aware regarding bear safety in the parks. Both the Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone require all food to be stored in the bear lockers located at each campsite.
