Hello, travelers! As my incredible journey through London is coming to an end, I wanted to spend my final full day savoring the sights and sounds along the iconic River Thames. A boat ride on the Thames offered a unique perspective on the city’s landmarks, followed by a leisurely stroll along the riverbanks, exploring some of the most vibrant and historic areas. Let me take you through this delightful day, filled with fun and discovery.
Morning: Thames Boat Ride – A River of Stories
Setting Sail on the Thames: Starting the day with a boat cruise along the Thames is the perfect way to see London’s skyline and famous landmarks from a different angle. The river has been the lifeblood of the city for centuries, and cruising along it offers a sense of the city’s rich history and modern vibrancy. I chose Thames River Sightseeing and it was perfect. The captain, although he claimed not to be a tour guide, was funny and informative and made the trip extremely enjoyable.
Highlights from the Boat Ride:
The Tower of London: As we sailed past the Tower of London, the imposing walls of this historic fortress reminded us of its storied past as a royal palace, prison, and treasury. The sight of the White Tower and the Traitor’s Gate from the river is truly striking.
Tower Bridge: One of the most iconic symbols of London, Tower Bridge is a masterpiece of Victorian engineering. Watching the bridge lift to let a tall ship pass is an unforgettable experience.
The Shard: London’s tallest building, The Shard, pierces the sky with its sleek design. It’s a stark contrast to the historical buildings surrounding it, symbolizing the city’s blend of old and new.
The Globe Theatre: A reconstruction of Shakespeare’s original Globe, this iconic theatre reminds us of London’s rich literary heritage. It’s a must-see for any theatre lover.
The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben: Seeing these iconic landmarks from the water provides a unique perspective. The Gothic architecture of the Palace of Westminster is breathtaking, and Big Ben, despite its ongoing renovation, remains a symbol of London.
Late Morning: Exploring the South Bank
The South Bank
What to See: After the boat ride, I disembarked at the lively South Bank, a cultural hub known for its arts venues, restaurants, and street performances.
Highlights:
The London Eye: One of the world’s tallest observation wheels, the London Eye offers stunning views over the city. Even from below, it’s a sight to behold. Southbank Centre: This vibrant cultural complex hosts art exhibitions, music performances, and more. It’s a great place to soak up some culture. Street Performers: The South Bank is famous for its street performers. From musicians to magicians, there’s always something entertaining happening.
Afternoon: Strolling Along the River
Millennium Bridge: This modern pedestrian bridge offers fantastic views of the Thames and leads directly to St. Paul’s Cathedral. The bridge’s sleek design contrasts beautifully with the historic cathedral in the background.
St. Paul’s Cathedral: Although I didn’t go inside this time, the exterior alone is awe-inspiring. It’s a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy the stunning architecture. To learn more about St. Paul’s Cathedral CLICK HERE.
Tate Modern: Just a short walk from the Millennium Bridge, the Tate Museum of Modern Art Museum is housed in a former power station. Even if modern art isn’t your thing, the building and views from the upper floors are worth the visit.
Evening: Dinner on the South Bank
What to Do: End your London adventure by finding a local pub and enjoying some pub fare and a cold one!
