Exploring London: Day 5 – Moving Day and an Afternoon at the British Museum

Welcome back to our London adventure! Day 5 brings a change of scenery as we move to a new Airbnb in the trendy area of Shoreditch. After settling in, I spent the afternoon exploring the world-renowned British Museum. Get ready for a day of transitions and cultural discoveries. Let’s dive in!

Morning: Moving Day to Shoreditch

Since the plan was to be in London for 2 weeks, Kate and I wanted a change of scenery during the stay. After a wonderful breakfast at Sunday in Brooklyn, we’re packing up and moving to the vibrant neighborhood of Shoreditch, known for its eclectic mix of street art, indie shops, and trendy eateries. Moving can be a bit of a hassle, but it’s also an exciting opportunity to experience a different part of the city.

Tips for a Smooth Move:

  • Pack Smart: Organize your belongings the night before to ensure a quick and efficient move.
  • Transport Options: Consider using a taxi service for convenience, especially if you have a lot of luggage.
  • Early Check-In: If possible, arrange for an early check-in at your new Airbnb to maximize your day.

Fun Fact: Shoreditch was once the heart of London’s entertainment scene in the Elizabethan era, home to the original Theatre where Shakespeare’s plays were performed.

Late Morning: Settling into Shoreditch

After the move, take some time to settle into your new Airbnb. Unpack your essentials and take a moment to relax and familiarize yourself with the new surroundings. Shoreditch offers a unique blend of old and new, making it a fantastic base for the rest of your London adventure.

Things to Explore Nearby:

  • Street Art: Wander the streets to admire the vibrant murals and graffiti that give Shoreditch its distinct character.
  • Boxpark: Visit this pop-up mall made from shipping containers, offering a variety of food, fashion, and lifestyle stores.
  • Brick Lane: Famous for its curry houses, vintage shops, and lively market, Brick Lane is a must-visit spot in Shoreditch.

Lunch Break: Tasting Shoreditch Flavors

Before heading to the British Museum, enjoy a delicious lunch at one of Shoreditch’s trendy cafes or eateries. Whether you’re in the mood for international cuisine or classic British fare, Shoreditch has something to satisfy every palate.

Top Picks:

  • Dishoom: Experience a taste of Bombay with mouth-watering dishes in a stylish setting.
  • Pizza East: Savor wood-fired pizzas in a rustic, industrial space.
  • The Breakfast Club: Enjoy all-day breakfast classics and hearty brunch options.

Early Afternoon: Exploring the British Museum

With lunch done, it’s time to get ready to immerse myself in history and culture at the British Museum. Located in Bloomsbury, this iconic institution houses a vast collection of art and artifacts from around the world, spanning over two million years of history.

Founded in 1753, the British Museum in London is one of the world’s most comprehensive institutions dedicated to human history, art, and culture. It was established through the bequest of Sir Hans Sloane, a physician and collector whose vast collection of books, manuscripts, natural specimens, and antiquities formed the museum’s initial holdings. The museum opened to the public in 1759, becoming the first national public museum in the world. Over the centuries, its collection has grown exponentially, encompassing over eight million works that span two million years of history. Notable artifacts include the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon Sculptures, and the Egyptian mummies. Housed in a neoclassical building designed by Sir Robert Smirke, the museum’s iconic Great Court, with its stunning glass roof, was added in 2000. Today, the British Museum stands as a testament to global cultural heritage, offering visitors an unparalleled journey through the achievements and histories of humanity.

Entry into the museum is free, but I recommend booking a timed ticket to avoid the general admission line, which was about a mile long when we were there over the weekend. Get your tickets HERE.

The Rosetta Stone at the British Museum

Must-See Exhibits:

  • Rosetta Stone: Discover the key to understanding ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.
  • Egyptian Mummies: Explore the fascinating world of ancient Egyptian burial practices and beliefs.
  • Parthenon Sculptures: Admire the stunning marble sculptures from the Parthenon in Athens.
  • The Lewis Chessmen: These intricate 12th-century chess pieces offer a glimpse into medieval life.

Pro Tip: The British Museum is enormous, so prioritize the exhibits you most want to see and consider using the museum’s map or mobile app to navigate efficiently. Keep in mind that the museum closes at 5pm, and the 2 1/2 hours I spent in the museum was not enough, and I am considering making a second trip to complete my viewing of all the incredible exhibits.

Late Afternoon: Relaxing in the Museum’s Courtyard

After exploring the museum, take a break in the beautiful Great Court, an architectural marvel with its stunning glass roof and spacious atrium. Enjoy a coffee at the Court Cafe or simply relax and people-watch in this serene setting.

The Great Court: British Museum

Interesting Fact: The Great Court is the largest covered public square in Europe, designed by architect Sir Norman Foster and opened in 2000.

Evening: Discovering Shoreditch by Night

Return to Shoreditch for an evening of exploration and relaxation. This neighborhood truly comes alive at night, with its buzzing nightlife, quirky bars, and live music venues.

Things to Do:

  • Cocktail Bars: Visit unique bars like Nightjar, known for its creative cocktails and speakeasy vibe.
  • Live Music: Catch a live gig at venues like Village Underground or The Old Blue Last.
  • Street Food: Head to Shoreditch High Street for an array of food trucks and pop-up stalls offering delicious late-night bites.

Top Tip: If you’re in the mood for something different, check out one of Shoreditch’s immersive theater experiences or escape rooms for a fun and interactive night out.
