Title: Exploring London: Day 2 – From Historic Landmarks to Vibrant Markets

Welcome back to our 14-day London adventure! Today, we continue to uncover the city’s rich history and vibrant culture. Get ready for a day filled with iconic landmarks, bustling markets, and scenic views. Let’s dive into Day 2!

Morning: Awe-Inspiring Westminster Abbey

Start your day with a visit to Westminster Abbey, one of the most significant religious buildings in the UK. This Gothic masterpiece has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the final resting place of numerous monarchs and notable figures. Tickets are required and make sure to book them early, especially in the summer. Kate and I just did a walk by today. I have a ticket to visit the Cathedral on Monday while she is working. Get your tickets HERE.

  • Poet’s Corner: Pay homage to literary greats like Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens, and William Shakespeare.
  • Royal Tombs: Discover the final resting places of kings, queens, and other notable historical figures.

Fun Fact: Westminster Abbey was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987 due to its historical and architectural significance.

Mid-Morning: Tasting Delights at Borough Market

Next, head to Borough Market, one of London’s oldest and most renowned food markets. This foodie paradise offers a diverse array of fresh produce, artisanal products, and delicious street food. It is usually extremely busy, so I recommend going at 10am when the market opens.

Borough Market

Must-Try Foods:

  • British Cheeses: Sample a variety of local cheeses from independent vendors.
  • International Cuisine: Enjoy mouth-watering dishes from around the world, from Spanish paella to Middle Eastern falafel.
  • Fresh Pastries: Indulge in freshly baked goods and pastries.

Pro Tip: Visit the market early to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more relaxed experience.

Early Afternoon: St. Paul’s Cathedral – A Symbol of Resilience

After satisfying your taste buds, make your way to St. Paul’s Cathedral, an architectural marvel and symbol of London’s resilience. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, this stunning cathedral has been an iconic part of London’s skyline since 1675.

Things to Do:

  • Whispering Gallery: Test the acoustics of this unique gallery where whispers travel across the dome.
  • Climb to the Dome: Ascend to the top for breathtaking views of the city.
  • Crypt: Explore the final resting place of notable figures like Admiral Nelson and the Duke of Wellington.

Did You Know? St. Paul’s Cathedral miraculously survived the Blitz during World War II, becoming a symbol of hope for Londoners.

Mid-Afternoon: Scenic Walk Along the River Thames

Next, take a leisurely stroll along the River Thames, enjoying the scenic views and vibrant atmosphere. This walk will take you past some of London’s most famous landmarks and offer plenty of photo opportunities.

Top Tip: Stop at one of the riverside cafes for a coffee or a refreshing drink while you soak in the views.

Late Afternoon/Evening: Exploring the City of London

Continue your exploration with a visit to the City of London, the historic and financial heart of the city. Discover the blend of ancient and modern architecture as you wander through this dynamic district.

City of London Leadenhall Market

The Bank of England: Visit the museum to learn about the history of British currency. The museum is free and no booking is required.

  • Leadenhall Market: Wander through this beautifully covered Victorian market, which dates back to the 14th century. I loved this part of London! It was fun to explore the shops, sit and enjoy an ale, and just enjoy the atmosphere. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you may recognize the area from the movies.
