Fairy Glen Falls is a hidden gem located near the picturesque village of Rosemarkie on the Black Isle in Scotland. This enchanting spot is perfect for nature lovers and those seeking a tranquil escape. Here’s what you can expect on your hike to Fairy Glen Falls:
Fairy Glen Falls Trail
The hike begins at the small car park near Rosemarkie Beach. From here, follow the signs for Fairy Glen. The trailhead is well-marked and easy to find. I walked from my Airbnb located above Crofters Restaurant, and it was just a short walk to the trailhead.
The round trip is approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) and takes about 1-2 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how long you spend at the falls.
The hike is relatively easy, making it suitable for families and hikers of all skill levels. The path can be muddy, especially after rain, so good walking shoes are recommended.
As you walk the trail, you’ll be surrounded by lush woodland, with the sound of birds and the rustling of leaves providing a serene backdrop. The path follows a charming stream, adding to the fairy-tale atmosphere.
Fairy Glen Falls
After a short walk, you’ll reach the first waterfall. This smaller cascade is a lovely spot to pause and take in the beauty of the area. Continuing along the trail, you’ll come to the main waterfall, which is more impressive in size. The falls plunge into a deep pool, creating a picturesque and tranquil scene. It’s a perfect spot for photos and a peaceful rest.
Chanonry Point Lighthouse
After enjoying the hike to Fairy Glen Falls, a visit to the Chanonry Point Lighthouse is a must. Built in 1846 by engineer Alan Stevenson, the Chanonry Point Lighthouse stands as a beacon at the entrance to the Moray Firth. Its white tower and classic design make it a picturesque landmark. Canonry Point, where the lighthouse is located is about 3 miles from Rosemarkie and easily accessible by car or a leisurely walk along the coastline. This iconic lighthouse offers stunning views and a chance to spot some of Scotland’s famous wildlife.
Chanonry Point is one of the best places in the UK to see bottlenose dolphins. The best time for sightings is typically during high tide when the dolphins come closer to shore to feed. Bring binoculars for a better view.
There is a small car park at Chanonry Point, but it can fill up quickly, especially during peak times. There is a fee to park, which was 3euros for 3 hours. I was only there about 10 minutes as there were no dolphins to be seen.
Tips for Visiting Rosemarkie
Weather: Scottish weather can be unpredictable, so dress in layers and bring waterproof clothing.
Footwear: Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes suitable for walking on varied terrain. I absolutely recommend hiking boots which have a better grip and more support than sneakers. The path was definitely muddy when I hiked, and I was grateful for the extra grip of my boots.
Supplies: Bring water, snacks, and a camera to capture the beautiful scenery. When you get to the first waterfall, there are plenty of rocks to take a break and enjoy a snack.
Respect Nature: Keep to the paths, take your litter home, and respect the local wildlife.
Accommodations
I stayed in the cutest Airbnb in Rosemarkie. Located in a separate building above the Crofters Restaurant, located directly across from the beach, it was the perfect location to spend a couple days. The Airbnb had a double bed, full kitchen, and a wonderful bathroom, with views of the water. I had 3 beautiful days and nights here, and would definitely recommend staying here if you are in the area. If you are hungry drop into the restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I popped in for dinner the first night I was here, and had a delicious pasta dish with garlic bread…with a cheese scone to go for breakfast the next day!
Rosemarkie offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and wildlife, making it a wonderful destination for any travel blogger. I loved Rosemarkie! It was the perfect place to slow down, sleep in, and talk long walks in nature and on the beach, especially after being in the hustle and bustle of the cities since I got here. Enjoy your adventure!
