10 Essential Backpacking Tips for Travel in Scotland

  1. Waterproof Jacket: Scotland’s weather is unpredictable, and a waterproof jacket, with an attached hood, will keep you dry during sudden rain showers and windy misty weather.
  2. Sturdy Hiking Boots: Good quality, waterproof hiking boots are essential for exploring Scotland’s rugged landscapes and trails. Make sure the boots are broken in before you begin your trip, as blisters can make any hike more challenging. Also don’t forget your good hiking socks.
  3. Layered Clothing: Pack a mix of lightweight and warm layers to adapt to changing temperatures, including thermal wear and a fleece jacket, mittens (I love the fingerless type) and a warm hat.
  4. Map and Compass: While GPS is handy, having a physical map and compass is crucial if you are planning on navigating remote areas with poor signal.
  5. Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is important, and a reusable water bottle helps you do so sustainably. Scotland’s tap water is safe and drinkable.
  6. First-Aid Kit: A basic first-aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any personal medications is a must.
  7. Portable Charger: Ensure your devices stay powered up, especially if you rely on your phone for maps, reservations, and emergency contacts. Make sure you purchase an adaptor if you are from the states.
  8. Quick-Dry Towel: A compact, quick-dry towel is useful for unexpected swims, rain, or hostel stays.
  9. Snacks and Energy Bars: Keeping a stash of snacks, for example Jerky, beef sticks and nuts, as well as some energy bars will keep you fueled during hikes and long travel days. I also recommend bringing along some protein powder in individual snack bags for a quick protein kick on the road.
  10. Backpack Rain Cover: Protect your belongings from getting soaked by using a rain cover for your backpack. My Cotopaxi backpack came with a rain cover which was super convenient.

Including these items in your backpack will help ensure a comfortable and prepared trip through Scotland. It is better to be well-prepared, than not, for a memorable backpacking adventure in and around this beautiful country called Scotland.

Quick Note Regarding Emergency Contacts and Important Documents: Save important contact numbers like local emergency services (999) and your country’s embassy or consulate to your phone and note section in case of emergency. Also take a picture of your Driver’s License, Passport and all credit cards you are traveling with in case you need to cancel a card or you lose your identification.
